7 Highly Effective Habits To Increase Your Productivity And Focus Levels
Updated: Feb 26
Are you looking to increase your productivity and focus levels?
In this post, I share 7 highly effective habits that I've learned and have implemented into my life to great success.
Since implementing these habits I feel a big difference in my performance and ability to get sh*t done!
One of the main things I always try to improve is my focus and productivity because that keeps me from wasting my most valuable resource - TIME.
Time is something we can never get back and I don't know about you but I want to use my time in the smartest way possible.
That's why I always keep learning new ways and habits I can implement into my life to make myself more productive.
So, let's get started!
Habit 1 - Do Your Most Important Tasks As Early In The Day As Possible
On each given day we've got a certain amount of mental energy at our disposal.
As we get through the day our mental energy slowly drains which makes us less and less focused and willing to do what we actually want to achieve.
This is why we have to be proactive and prioritize our most important tasks to be done when we are the sharpest and have the most amount of mental energy.
If we do so it will be much easier for us to deal with those tasks and accomplish them well.
It also removes the worry of having to deal with it later and so we become more relaxed for the rest of the day.
So, what I recommend is to schedule your day ahead of time.
I even like to schedule my entire week ahead of time, so I know exactly what I'm after that week.
Also, instead of waking up and scrolling through social media, answering emails and other reactive activities, complete your tasks first and then later on you can relax and do those less important activities which require less focus anyways.
Habit 2 - Focus On A Small Amount Of Project At Any Given Time
Focus is one of the key factors in increasing our productivity so eliminating the habit of multitasking is absolutely crucial!
If we take on too many projects at once we are hindering our performance and ability to focus.
When you're taking on too much to the point that you can't focus your attention you'll do a lousy job and are prone to make mistakes.
So, if you've got too many projects you have to accomplish at once don't do it all by yourself... Outsource it to other people who are professionals at it and focus on 1-2 things you do best.
Habit 3 - Create A Distraction-Free Environment
So many whistles and rings! HAAAAA!!
Shhhhh... I can't concentrate!!
Do you know that feeling?
I bet you do...
We live in a world that demands our attention every second we breathe...
Social media notifications, phone messages, calls.
You name it!
It's very hard to focus on something and complete it when your phone, TV screen, family members, friends, etc', want your attention all the time.
That's why you've got to create a quiet place where you can completely focus on what you want to accomplish.
Silence your phone and put it away.
Close the door.
Shut down your TV and just focus without any distractions.
It's actually very hard to regain focus after getting distracted which means it will take you more time to get things done.
According to this study by the University of California Irvine, It takes the brain around 23 minutes to regain focus after being distracted.
So, as I said before, do yourself a favor and focus on 1-2 things.
Leave everything else to other people or get it done after finishing these 1-2 projects.
Habit 4 - Surround Yourself With Highly Productive People That Get Things Done And Have The Results Your After
Just as creating a distraction-free environment is important, so is creating a supportive and inspiring environment.
As the famous saying goes "tell me who your friends are and I'll tell you who you are".
When you surround yourself with productive individuals that have the results you want you will be influenced by them and slowly become just like them.
On the other hand, if you surround yourself with negative, lazy individuals who haven't accomplished what you're after, you will slowly become like them too.
So be careful whos company you seek.
Sometimes that means getting rid of or limiting the amount of contact with certain people in your life.
These people might even be related to you and I'm not necessarily saying get rid of your family members if they are negative people...
But do limit the amount of contact you have with them to an extent where you feel like they aren't influencing you in a bad way.
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!
Habit 5 - Make Time The Most Valuable Resource You Have
As I said at the beginning of this blog post...
Time is something you can never get back unlike money or energy.
You only live once and if you give your time away freely to anyone who wants it your actually giving up your most valuable resource for nothing.
Most of us live life thinking we got a ton of time and giving it away for free just to reach old age and be disappointed in the way we gave it away so easily without using it to accomplish what we wanted.
Don't let it be you!
Give your time the importance it deserves and you'll see your productivity skyrocket!
Just as you wouldn't give your money away to everyone for nothing you have to think of your time as a resource and invest it in things that will move the needle in your life.
That means saying NO to people and being hard to reach if you've got something more important you want to accomplish at that time.
Now it doesn't mean you become anti-social and funless.
It means prioritizing your use of time in each given day to accomplish your most important objective first and then you can do other stuff that are less important knowing that you've used your time and mental energy to move the needle that day.
You can even use fun activities as a reward for accomplishing these objectives.
What I like to do is schedule my week ahead of time (usually at the weekend) and write down all the important things I want to accomplish that week.
By doing so, I'm blocking certain time slots in my week for accomplishing these things.
And guess what, if I've scheduled a video to be published on my channel on Wednesday and my friend calls me to invite me to go watch a movie I will say NO because I'm dedicated to my audience.
Habit 6 - Sleep
Sleep is probably one of the most important factors that influence productivity and focus.
Aside from all the health problems that will arise from sleep deprivation...
Without proper sleep, your concentration, productivity, and cognition will drop significantly.
While you sleep your brain makes connections and recalibrates for the next day.
Make sure you get enough sleep (usually 8-9 hours per night) and create a great sleeping environment that is pitch dark, quiet, has a cool temperature of around 18 degrees Celsius or 64 degrees Fahrenheit.
Your mattress and pillow should be comfortable and your covers should be nice, clean, and fluffy.
Habit 7 - Meditation
Meditation is a great way to relax and increase your focus.
Meditation is basically the act of concentrating your attention on your breath while each time your mind wanders away (and it will) your "task" is to bring it back to your breath.
This acts as a great exercise for increasing focus and increasing resistance to distractions.
Most people like to meditate at the morning though you don't have to if you feel another time might suit you better.
I for example like to meditate in the middle of the day instead of in the morning because I feel that it helps me calm down and lower my stress level after working for half a day.
It also helps me take a bit of a break and recalibrate my mind and thoughts.
So use it to suit your own needs.
To piece it all together and summarize it:
Get the most important things done as early in the day as possible
Focus on a small number of projects at any given time (1-2 at most)
Create a distraction-free environment
Make time the most valuable resource you have and DON'T give it away easily
Surround yourself with productive individuals who have the results your after and get rid of the negative people who bring you down (or limit your contact with them to a healthy degree)
Get proper sleep each night (8-9 hours on average with a good sleeping environment for better quality sleep)
If you do these things you're bound to increase your productivity and focus levels monumentally!
All of those tips are things I've learned and used in my own life and found great success in doing so.
