Is Wix Good For SEO? - Wix SEO Review

Updated: Dec 14, 2019

Introduction To SEO:

If you want to get consistent and free traffic to your website, you have to optimize it for search engines by doing what's known as SEO (search engine optimization).

SEO is the process of ranking your website on the first page of Google for certain keyword or keyword phrases.

Meaning that when someone searches Google for a certain keyword or keyword phrase (for example, "what is SEO") your website will be relevant to their query in the eyes of Google and they will suggest your website in search results (SERP).

Google does not directly reveal how to rank your website on the first page of search results to prevent people from gaming the system.

Even with this fact, there are still some things that the SEO community has tested and agrees to affect your site's ranking on Google.

Among these things are:

  • Including keywords and keyword phrases in your meta title, meta description, and URL

  • Page loading speed

  • Mobile friendly vs not mobile-friendly

  • As well as many others…

And in this article, we'll be looking at what Wix has to offer in terms of search engine optimization.

Wix Introduction:

Wix is one of the best if not the best website builder on the planet right now, serving over 150m users worldwide.

It's ease of use, advanced capabilities, and reasonable prices have made it a formidable force to be reckoned with in the website builder world.

But is the platform optimized for SEO?

Well, a few years ago Wix was really really bad for SEO (I mean really bad!) and people warned to stay away from the platform for that reason.

Some of the issues were:

  • It used to put weird characters in the URL like #,?,8 which is bad for SEO.

  • Optimizing meta tags and URLs wasn't possible which is terrible for SEO.

  • Adding image alt text was not an option.

  • And more...

But Wix has made a big effort to fix these problems and today has a lot more to offer in its on-page SEO arsenal.

Mobile-friendly website optimizer – Wix has a great and easy to use mobile version for every page of your site which you can even customize to look different than your desktop version.

This is very important for search engines and Google has even said it openly in this statement.

Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.

Meta Title, Meta Description, And URL Optimization:

On each page, you are able to

customize your meta title, meta description, and URL which show up search results.

This is one of the first things search engines look on when deciding if the page is relevant to the searcher's query.

So placing your main keywords in there is very important.

Another thing Wix has added is caching which basically keeps a cookie on the user's browser that saves your page information on it.

This means that the next time the user visits your page it will load faster since that information is already saved in the user's browser.

This is important for user experience and Google loves that.

Structured Data - An advanced SEO feature that helps Google understand your content better and possibly feature it in rich results (stands out a lot more than regular search results).

Canonical Tags:

This is let's search engines know which URL is the primary one in case of duplicate content or different URLs who point to the same page (for example a mobile version and a desktop version).

This is a very advanced feature that wasn't available back in the day.

301 Redirects:

If you need to change a URL but don't want it to create a lot of broken links (which search engines really don't like) you can create what is called a 301 redirect.

This will redirect anyone who clicks on your old URL to your new URL so that you won't need to change thousands of links all over the internet.

Wix SEO Whiz:

This is probably one of the coolest parts of Wix and further strengthen its dedication to make the platform as user-friendly as possible.

The Wix SEO Whiz is a program that asks you a few questions about your SEO objectives and then tells you exactly what you need to do to accomplish these keyword objectives.

This feature is AMAZING for someone who knows nothing or very little about SEO and by following these simple instructions is capable to optimize his on-page SEO.

SEO Optimized Blog:

Wix's blog was a mess in the past but now has gone a complete overhaul.

It's possible to create categories for your blog which helps Google understand your content a lot better.

It's possible to enable Accelerated Mobile Page (AMP) which makes your blog post page lighter on mobile and load faster as a result which ensures a better user experience and search engines love that.

3 heading tags which helps create a structure to your content by creating a hierarchy.

This helps Google understand what the content is about, and it loves a well-organized content to improve user experience.

Your post title is automatically tagged with the H1 tag (place your most important keywords in here).

And for the rest of your blog post, you can use H2 and H3 tags as subheadings.

Like on other pages of your site, you can customize your blog post's meta title, meta description, and URL which show on SERP to help Google and other search engines understand your content better and rank for important keywords.

Page Loading Speeds:

This is something that Wix can improve on since loading speed for pages can sometimes feel a bit sluggish.

Heading Tags:

As in the blog, heading tags serve the purpose of structuring your content.

On regular pages (not the blog) you have the option to create up to 6 heading tags (H1-H6), though usually, you'll probably be using H1-H3.

Image Alt Text:

Search engines still do not possess the ability to understand images, so creating images with text in them will mean nothing to search engines.

That's why you have a feature called alt text which basically lets you describe what's in the image.

This is helpful for visually impaired people who can't see your image understand what's on it.

And aside from the good you're doing for these people, Google reads your alt text to understand your content better.

So make sure to include keywords in there if it's relevant and accurately describes the image.

SEO Guide:

Wix has created an easy to understand SEO guide which is tied directly to their platform to help you understand SEO a lot better.

SSL Encryption:

This protects the data users send on your site and is especially important if you have an eCommerce store.

Google prefers websites with an SSL encryption and Wix has it on all of their plans.

Wix is perfect for beginners and small businesses who are not experts in SEO.

It makes everything really simple and easy to do.

The page loading speeds need a bit of improvement as well as the extra string they add to the URL in the blog (i.e.:www.websitename.com/post/postname) might be problematic.

Other than that Wix is very capable of ranking any website to the first page of search results.
