Starting Out As A Freelancer - Tips and Strategies

I feel you! and so today I created this guide to help you get out of the "rat race" or just earn an extra income.


It will teach you how to get started as a freelancer and give you some tips and strategies to succeed as one.


So let't get started!


The first thing you'll want to do is sign up to freelancing platforms like Fiverr or Upwork where you can get jobs pretty easily as they already have traffic or people on their sites so it's a great way to get started.




The most important thing when you start is: well obviously deciding what is it that you're gonna provide,what are you going to sell?

A good way to do it is to write down all the skills you think you're good at and you like to do.


After you do that, you should go to Fiverr or Upwork and search for your specific skill.

Now what you're gonna be looking for is a high number of sellers with a high number of reviews as well as good prices.

And the reason for that is that high number of reviews means there is a lot of demand for that skill and high prices means it's gonna be profitable for you and you're not gonna be working for pennies.


After doing that you're going to want research your competitors and see what they are writing in their sales pages, how are they selling their product or their service:

You're going to see:

  • What prices are they're offering?

  • What images are they using?

  • What videos?

Anything that could give you inspiration for creating your own profile and your own service page.



After doing that you're gonna want to know who is your target customer because in that way you will be able to speak to them better and attract them to your sales page.

So what I recommend is you go online to places like Facebook or forums and just write down some keywords that are related to the service you are offering.


So for example if you want to develop websites for people, go to Facebook or Google or wherever and write down website develping, and you will be able to see:

  • What people are saying about it?

  • What are they asking for?

  • What are the questions and?

  • What are their needs and wants?

In that way you will be able to market to them better, write down a good sales page, and know how to communicate with them.


Now when you're first starting out you're not gonna want to set high prices because when you're new you don't have any records or testimonials and you need to attract new customers to you.

So the best way to do it ,in my opinion, is to set attractive prices.


At first you might be working for low prices but the most important thing is that you start accumulating reviews.

The more reviews you have, the more orders will come your way, and the better the prices you will be able to set.

So at first set low prices and over-deliver on your work.

You should always over deliver on your work because that will keep your customers loyal and spread the word and as a result build up your reputation.


After you start receiving reviews you should set up your social media accounts so you can get more people to your sales page, because you have something to show for you have some reviews right now and people are more likely to buy from you then if you don't have any reviews at all.


Over time you'll want to start building your own customer base in order to be self sustaind and not have to solely reliy on these freelancing platform.


So I suggest that after you set up your social media accounts, start collecting emails, because email marketing is one of the best ways you can promote to your customers for free (except for the monthly email marketing service payment which is a few bucks) and whenever you want.


After you start collecting emails and you have enough of them you should build your own website where you will be able to sell the service without the need to pay fees to a third party like Fiverr or Upwork, because those platforms take a cut out of every sale you make or they have some fees you are required to pay.


Nonetheless you should keep your accounts in there active because it still brings in a good amount of orders.


In conclusion:

  1. Set up your account on Fiverr/Upwork.

  2. Come up with an idea of what your gonna sell (make a list of a few things you think your good at and you like doing).

  3. Research your idea on Fiverr/Upwork by searching for it in the search bar, and looking for a high number of sellers with a high number of reviews as well as good prices.

  4. Research the competition to see what are they writing in their sales pages, what images and videos are they using, and so on...

  5. Look for your target customers online on Facebook/forums to see what do they think, ask, want and need about that service.

  6. Set up your profile and sales page.

  7. After having a good number of reviews, set up social media accounts that link to your sales page.

  8. Collect emails from customers who come through your social media accounts (you can use Aweber as an email marketing service)

  9. Build your website to sell your service there, and start directing traffic into your website, instead of the freelancing platforms.














So these are some suggested strategies you could use to start your own freelancing business.
